3 Tips for Talking with Your Teenager About Plastic Surgery

Tips for Talking About Plastic Surgery with Teens - Knoxville, TennesseeDiscussing plastic surgery with your teenager can be particularly touchy subject. Looks and how they are perceived by others can weigh with significance to teenagers.

Here are three tips you should know before approaching the subject with your teenager:

1. Know the statistics. Teenage plastic surgery is still not incredibly common.

While it seems that the topic is becoming more popular, cosmetic surgery procedures among 13-19 year-olds still only accounted for about 2% of the total market in 2014.

Your teenager may think that this is something that everyone is doing but market statistics do not backup that theory.

2. Know which surgeries may be appropriate.

Teenage bodies are still changing, because of this it is still early to have some surgeries.

Rhinoplasty is one of the most popular surgeries which teens have. By the middle of the teenage years, the nose is fully developed so having a nose job is not premature for teenagers.

While they are not terribly common, some teenagers do seek breast augmentations. If one chooses to have a breast implant in the teenage years then they should know that the surgery will have to be done again in their 30s, because implants only have a 20-year lifespan.

3. Uncover the underlying issue.

You should ask a few questions to find out why your teen wants to have plastic surgery. Teenagers are often influenced by those around them. Before taking such a serious step, you should ensure that your teenager is doing it for the right reasons.

Atlanta plastic surgeon Marc Klein says that many of the teens he has seen seeking liposuction have been influenced by their mother.

Dr. Scot Glasberg told Yahoo News that he questions every teen to make sure that they are doing it for themselves and not a boyfriend or girlfriend.
