Breast Implants and Pregnancy

If you are considering breast augmentation, you may be wondering how breast implants might impact breastfeeding during pregnancy. This is usually only a problem if the milk ducts and surrounding nerves are damaged during the breast augmentation procedure. As long as your surgeon takes care to avoid harming the milk ducts, you should not encounter problems with breastfeeding. The majority of women who undergo breast augmentation can successfully breastfeed with implants.

During your initial consultation, Dr. Kleto will discuss the specific incision type and placement method that will best preserve your ability to breastfeed.

Many women are also concerned about how pregnancy might affect the aesthetic results of a breast augmentation. While your breast implants themselves will not be affected, the relationship of the implant to your breast tissue might be altered. If you plan on getting pregnant in the near future, you may want to postpone your breast augmentation until after you are finished having children.

Pregnancy naturally takes a toll on your body, stretching skin, muscles, and other tissues. You may notice a loss of volume, skin tone, and some amount of sagging in your breasts. If these changes are noticeable enough, further breast surgery might be warranted – such as a breast lift. However, some women’s breasts look just fine after pregnancy and do not need additional surgery.
