Facelift Recovery

Like all surgical procedures, a facelift requires healing and recovery time. Plastic surgeon Dr. Dean Kleto will inform you of what to expect from your recovery, which may include:

  • Sleeping in an elevated position to reduce swelling.
  • Avoiding certain medications, including non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines, like ibuprofen.
  • Avoiding excessive sun exposure and cigarette smoke, as these things can delay and hinder healing.
  • Avoiding strenuous activity and exercise for about two weeks.

You should see a significant improvement in swelling after the first day or two, although some minor swelling may persist for a couple weeks. Bruising also may be apparent for about two weeks.

Because of swelling, bruising and some discomfort, most facial plastic surgery patients allow two to three weeks before returning to work and social activities. You may be able to return to these activities sooner, depending on how you feel and whether you are comfortable with your appearance. You should be able to wear makeup after about one week.

You should have a good indication of your facelift results after a few weeks, although it is important to know that slight swelling will continue to subside over several months. After about six months, you should see the final outcome of your facelift.
