Questions about Rhinoplasty/Nose Surgery

Rhinoplasty—often referred to as a “nose job”—is a cosmetic surgery procedure that can alter the size and shape of your nose. Following, board-certified Knoxville, Tennessee, plastic surgeon Dr. Dean Kleto answers some commonly asked questions about this procedure.

What conditions can nose surgery correct?

A rhinoplasty can be used to address several problems including:

  • A nose that appears too large in relation to your face
  • A nose with a bulbous tip
  • A nose with bumps or divots
  • A nose that appears too wide
  • A nose that droops or is upturned
  • Asymmetrical nostrils

What is rhinoplasty surgery like?

There are two basic types of nose surgery: open rhinoplasty, in which incisions are made inside the nostrils and under your nose, and closed rhinoplasty, in which incisions are made only inside your nostrils. The type of procedure that’s best for you will depend on your individual nose structure and cosmetic goals; both forms allow Dr. Kleto to reshape your nasal cartilage and provide symmetry to your nose in proportion with your face. Rhinoplasty procedures are performed on an outpatient basis and typically take one to two hours.

When will I see the results from nose surgery?

Recovery from rhinoplasty typically takes between two and six weeks, during which you will likely experience some swelling and bruising. The results of your nose surgery will become evident as you heal, and patients generally see the full visible results of rhinoplasty within a year.
