What To Expect After Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is the single most popular plastic surgery procedure performed in America, and has one of the highest post-surgery satisfaction rates as well. Despite this, some women are apprehensive about having breast surgery, fearing that the recovery will be long and painful or that something will go wrong during the surgery.how long does swelling last after breast surgery

We are here to put your fears to rest. Dr. Dean Kleto has years of experience performing all kinds of breast surgeries, including breast augmentation, breast lift, and breast reduction. We’ve put together this guide to recovery after breast augmentation in Knoxville to ease your worries and lay out what exactly you can expect after surgery.

Recovery After Breast Surgery

Breast augmentation is performed under general anesthesia, so you will not be able to drive yourself home. We recommend making plans to have someone pick you up so that you don’t need to worry about it afterwards. In addition, it will make your life a lot easier if you have someone to help you out around the house for the first day or two.

You should expect some discomfort and swelling, but this can be managed with medicines that Dr. Kleto will provide. Most patients tolerate the initial recovery very well.

For the first two days, you should:

  • Take only the medicine Dr. Kleto prescribes – do not take aspirin or ibuprofen.
  • Keep your sutures clean and dry, and do not use creams or lotions on them.
  • Take the full course of any antibiotics prescribed.
  • Do not perform any strenuous activities.

After the first two days, you should:

  • Replace your dressings with a sports bra.
  • Continue to keep sutures clean and dry.
  • Sleep at a 45 degree angle to reduce swelling.
  • Perform mild exercise such as walking, but continue to refrain from strenuous activities.

The majority of swelling after breast surgery tends to dissipate in just a few weeks, but you may experience residual swelling for up to three to six months. Bruising usually resolves over a week or two. Most patients are able to return to work (as long as that work does not require heavy lifting or strenuous exercise) in as little as four to seven days.
