Liposuction Questions

Serving Knoxville, Sevierville, Knox County & Nearby Areas of Tennessee

Liposuction is a body contouring procedure, not a weight loss procedure. Liposuction can remove excess fat from targeted areas of your body, but should not be used as a method of weight loss. It is a reshaping procedure used to complement your weight loss and exercise results.

The area of treatment is injected with saline solution containing medication that numbs and constricts blood vessels. Small incisions are made to allow the insertion of the cannula. Fat is removed a little at a time to control the contour and shape desired.

Fat, once removed, cannot come back. This does not mean that new fat cannot accumulate. To help extend the results of your liposuction, you should lead a healthy lifestyle. This includes getting at least two hours of vigorous exercise a week and eating a healthy diet with plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables, and lean meats.

Cellulite, wrinkles, and dimples cannot be removed with liposuction. Liposuction is used to remove deep layers of fat, which can actually cause superficial layers of cellulite to become more obvious. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Dean Kleto can discuss this with you during your initial consultation.

There may be some bruising following liposuction. However, the medication injected into the fatty layer and compression garments after surgery can help minimize the bruising and swelling.

Dr. Kleto will supply you with compression garments to wear following your procedure. Wearing these garments will assist in keeping swelling down, and also in helping your skin conform to its new contour.

Liposuction is one of the most common plastic surgery procedures performed in the United States. Over the years, advanced techniques have made liposuction a safe and effective way to improve your body contour.

Like any surgery, risks such as bleeding and infection are possible. Dr. Kleto takes great care while performing liposuction to help reduce your risks. Carefully following all of Dr. Kleto’s postsurgical advice will also be helpful in preventing complications.

Liposuction is a good way to treat those whose ideal figure is held up by areas of fat deposits. If you have the correct bone structure and not too much excess skin, this may be right for you. Often a tummy tuck or other procedure is required in addition to liposuction to reach your aesthetic desire. Alternatives to liposuction will be presented if it is determined this is not the right procedure for you.
