What Are the Requirements for Breast Augmentation?

Wed, 10/06/2021

Breast augmentation creates large, full, shapely breasts. It not only boosts the size, but also enhances the overall appearance of the breasts. Hundreds of thousands of women undergo this procedure in the U.S. every year! You may be really excited about the prospect of finally getting this procedure that you’ve been considering for some time, but how do you know if you meet all of the candidacy requirements?

A close up of a woman's large bust in a black braThe only way to know for sure is to arrange a consultation with experienced plastic surgeon Dr. Dean Kleto. He will first listen fully to your goals, concerns, expectations, and ideas, before letting you know if he thinks breast enlargement is the right match for you. Making sure the expectations are in alignment with the outcome is the first step.

Other requirements and candidacy factors include:

  • You are in good overall health. If you have any active infections or health conditions, Dr. Kleto will review the details and your current treatments. He will discuss how the presence of any health conditions will affect your candidacy for the procedure.
  • Your habits around tobacco use and/or alcohol consumption. If you aren’t willing to quit smoking - at the very least temporarily - then you may not be an ideal candidate for breast augmentation. Smoking and other tobacco use negatively affects the healing process, so now may be the right time to quit. Similarly, moderate to excessive alcohol consumption will likely need to be avoided during the pre-surgical and recovery phase.

  • You’re making decisions clearly. Your emotional well-being is an important part of opting for any elective surgery. You shouldn’t be getting larger breasts in order to make someone else happy, to make yourself feel like someone else, to address an underlying issue like depression or poor self-image. Dr. Kleto will want to make sure you are making this decision from a healthy, clear mindset.
  • You’ve weighed the risks and benefits. All surgeries have risks and benefits. As a fully informed patient, you deserve a clear accounting of all the possible complications, the likelihood of those complications occurring, and a description of what to expect from results. Dr. Kleto cares deeply that each of his patients is making an informed decision, and he will provide everything you need to know in order to make that decision.

These are a few of the candidacy issues you’ll discuss with Dr. Kleto but there certainly are others. He takes all the time you need during this visit so that you can feel comfortable with whatever decision you make. Body Contouring Candidates

Wed, 09/15/2021

A young woman in a cropped sports bra and matching leggings stretches her backBody contouring refers to a wide category of cosmetic procedures. Unlike breast or face procedures, body contouring is aimed at the concerns of the belly, back, hips, waist, upper arms, buttocks, and thighs. You may have worked hard to tone your body but find that certain areas simply don’t respond to weight loss and exercise, or have become quite saggy after significant weight loss. It is exactly these issues that body contouring is well-suited to correcting.

There are many types of body shaping procedures. Overall, most of these procedures target:

  • Excess skin
  • Excess fat
  • Hanging or sagging skin
  • Loose, puffy tissue
  • Lack of shape
  • Lack of definition

The right one for you will depend on the area of your body you want to modify, as well as the exact concern, whether it’s fat, skin, or both. Dr. Kleto will help you choose.

These surgeries are performed under general anesthesia. Most of them are outpatient procedures, so you will be able to go back home after a period of supervised recovery. One of the reasons body contouring remains so popular is because the results are effective, and they also last a long time. Although it is of course still possible to gain new weight, and the effects of aging will also impact your physique, in general the results achieved with body contouring are permanent in the sense that the skin and fat that is removed is gone for good.

Types of Body Contouring Procedures

Dr. Kleto performs:

In certain situations, a procedure can be combined with another one, in order to achieve optimal results in a single surgical appointment. But you will have to consult Dr. Kleto about combining procedures first, so that he can make sure it is the best and safest option for you.

Common Liposuction Treatment Areas

Wed, 08/04/2021

A middle aged man in gray glasses and a green button-up shirt stands against a orange background and holds his hand to his chin wondering about something with a smile on his face

Liposuction is truly a versatile treatment. Using thin tubes called cannulas, fat is disrupted and removed through tiny circular incisions. Once they completely heal and fade, the scars are virtually impossible to see and recognize. Dr. Kleto also works to place the incisions in well-hidden areas whenever possible.

Liposuction can be applied to many areas of the physique, including:

  • Areas of the face
  • The neck
  • Abdomen
  • Back
  • “Bra roll” back fat
  • Breasts
  • Chest
  • Male breasts
  • Calves
  • Thighs
  • Buttocks
  • “Banana roll” fat beneath the butt cheeks
  • “Love handles” and “muffin tops”
  • Hips
  • Flanks

These locations tend to hold onto stubborn fat accumulations, even if the rest of your body has slimmed as you pursue weight loss and fitness goals. Liposuction may be the right way to eliminate the persistent fat cells.

Liposuction is very common in the U.S. It usually ranks within the top 5 procedures annually. Although not risk-free, the surgery has a long-standing record of safety and effectiveness when performed by an experienced and qualified surgeon. Dr. Kleto is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, and he is personally committed to achieving great results for each one of his patients.

“Who is not a good candidate for liposuction?”

Although liposuction is a highly versatile treatment that can be used to reduce fat on many areas of the body, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s right for your goals. Liposuction wouldn’t be the right treatment for:

  • A lot of skin sagging from a certain area of the body
  • Cellulite
  • Wrinkles

Liposuction is an ideal procedure for removing fat. If there is a lot of excess skin, such as an apron-like section of skin hanging from the abdomen, then a tummy tuck or body lift may need to be performed to remove that skin. These body contouring procedures can often be combined with liposuction for optimal results.

How Long Does Breast Augmentation Last?

Wed, 07/07/2021

A young woman with curly hair in a professional red blouse smiles at the camera in an office settingBreast augmentation with breast implants not only increases breast size, but also improves overall breast shape. It continues to be one of the most popular procedures in the U.S. every year, and is often the Number 1 procedure with a few hundred thousand procedures performed annually.

If you are considering breast enlargement, you may be wondering how long the results will last. It’s a good question, because most people who invest in their aesthetic goals want to make sure the results will be long-lasting.

Overall, breast augmentation provides lasting enhancement. When it comes to longevity, the two things to consider are 1) how long the implants last, and 2) whether the breast skin at some point needs some rejuvenation due to sagging. Breast implants are not rated as or considered to be lifetime medical devices, which means it’s reasonable to plan to replace them at some point. They may leak, rupture, ripple, change position, or become surrounded by hardened scar tissue. You may also decide you want to change from saline to silicone, change the size, or change some other implant feature. You may also decide to get a revision procedure if skin begins to sag off the edge of the implant or droop, even though the implants themselves will not droop over time.

On average, many women with breast implants will have a revision breast procedure to remove or replace their implants 10-20 years after the initial surgery. Although, it is important to note that there is no set timeline or expiration date with breast implants. By closely following Dr. Kleto’s recovery guidelines and aftercare instructions, you’ll set yourself on a good path toward long-lasting results. Dr. Kleto works with his breast augmentation patients to check in on their results and to address any concerns. You can rely on Dr. Kleto to help you decide if breast implant replacement will be beneficial down the road.

If you are wondering if breast enhancement is right for your aesthetic and restorative goals, please call the practice of Dr. Dean Kleto at 865-524-2442. Dr. Kleto has both a Knoxville and Sevierville location, and is proud to provide aesthetic results for women and men from across Tennessee.

Upper vs. Lower Eyelid Lift

Wed, 06/30/2021

A portrait of a middle-aged woman tilting her glasses down.In practice, a blepharoplasty can refer to an upper eyelid lift, a lower eyelid lift, or both. While patients with advanced signs of aging may benefit from combining both lifts into one procedure, other patients may want to only address a specific cosmetic or functional concern. For example, upper eyelid surgery may be ideal for patients who have sagging skin obscuring their vision, while lower eyelid surgery is best for those who want to minimize the appearance of dark circles under the eyes. Here are some of the differences between the two procedures and what they can address.

Upper Eyelid Surgery

The goal of this type of blepharoplasty is to remove excess skin and fat from the upper eyelids. As we age, the skin around our upper eye becomes droopy and puffy. While sagging skin is more likely to occur in older patients, fat deposits resulting in puffiness can occur in patients in their 20s or 30s.

During this procedure, incisions are made in the natural crease of the eyelids to help trim away loose skin and reposition them. When the excess tissue is removed, the eyelids are then lifted for a more youthful appearance.

Lower Eyelid Surgery

This procedure is focused on correcting bags and fine lines under the eyes. During the aging process, the cheeks will start to lose volume, causing the lower eyes to appear hollow. In addition, since the lower eyelids are lax, they develop wrinkles over time as they retract from the eye. This can make pouches of fat underneath look more prominent as well, leading to a puffy, sunken look.

Lower eyelid surgery usually involves an incision right below the lower eyelashes. Skin and fat are removed during the procedure and, if necessary, the remaining fat is redistributed to look less puffy.
