Are Tummy Tuck Results Permanent?

Fri, 07/15/2022

No other procedure can do as much for the appearance of your midsection as a tummy tuck. This popular cosmetic surgery offers unbeatable waist-slimming and muscle-repairing benefits. Best of all, tummy tuck patients enjoy long-term results by avoiding a few things going forward.

Getting Pregnant After a Tummy Tuck

While it isn’t dangerous to have a child after a tummy tuck, it also isn’t recommended. That’s because another pregnancy can have a negative effect on your cosmetic outcome. You may find yourself dealing with the very same concerns that initially led you to get this surgery.

For example, your skin and muscles are more than likely going to get stretched again. Excess fat may also accumulate along your waistline, which can be difficult to lose after you give birth. If you want to undo these changes and reclaim your flat stomach, it could take another surgery.

Post-Tummy Tuck Weight Gain

Weight gain is another thing that can impact the longevity of your tummy tuck results. While a fluctuation of several pounds won’t affect your outcome, significant weight gain certainly will.

Similar to having children, putting on a lot of weight can cause hanging skin and other issues. It can lead to stretched abdominal muscles, stubborn pockets of excess fat, and stretch marks. Even if you shed the pounds gained after a tummy tuck, you may still need another procedure.

Tips to Maintain Your Tummy Tuck Results

Getting a tummy tuck means investing time, money, and energy into your figure. Fortunately, protecting that investment and maintaining your results doesn’t have to be incredibly difficult.

Here are some simple tips to make your tummy tuck last:

  • Don’t schedule your procedure until your family is complete.
  • Establish healthy habits and reach a stable weight before having surgery.
  • Continue to eat well and exercise regularly after your procedure.

What Kind of Breast Implant Is Best?

Thu, 04/21/2022

Woman holding a breast implant during her surgical consultationA great thing about breast augmentation is how customizable it is. You can choose from many different breast implant options to create the exact results you want. The best implant for you will depend on what material, size, and projection are capable of achieving your unique goals.

Saline vs. Silicone

All breast implants have a silicone shell. Saline implants contain sterile saltwater. Meanwhile, silicone implants contain smooth silicone gel.

Today, silicone implants are the most popular. Silicone implants were used in 54% of all breast augmentations in 2020. Meanwhile, saline implants were only used in 16%, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

Many patients think silicone implants are best because they tend to look and feel the most natural. They won’t deflate when ruptured or cause any visible rippling beneath the skin.

If you’re interested in silicone implants, you can consider a newer style with a highly cohesive gel filling. These implants are called gummy bear implants. They offer incredibly realistic results.

Other Breast Implant Choices

You’ll need to consider more than just the material of your breast implants. A few other factors can play a significant role in your cosmetic outcome. These factors include:

  • Size: Breast implants come in lots of sizes. That means you can go for a subtle increase in volume or a more dramatic boost. In the end, it’s a matter of personal preference.
  • Projection: Projection describes how far the breast implants extend past the chest wall. Implants with less projection tend to give a more natural result. Meanwhile, implants with more projection are generally associated with a perkier and fuller breast appearance.
  • Placement: This choice comes down to whether your implants will go above or below your chest muscles. Each option has distinct advantages and considerations.

Our office makes it easy to pick your perfect breast implants. We use advanced imaging technology to give you a better idea of how these different options will look on your body.

Does Liposuction Leave Loose Skin?

Tue, 03/22/2022

Skinny woman pinching her stomachLiposuction is a fantastic way to remove stubborn excess fat. However, you may be wondering if your skin will tighten up to match your slim new shape. It really depends on a few different factors. Learn what to expect based on your liposuction procedure, skin quality, and more.

What Type of Lipo Tightens Skin?

Traditional liposuction removes excess fat but does not offer any skin tightening benefits. The same cannot be said of newer and more advanced techniques. VASER® Liposuction, for example, is a next-generation liposuction procedure that incorporates ultrasound energy. It has been shown to provide patients with enhanced skin retraction. Translation: better skin tightening.

You can easily find before and after images of patients who had traditional liposuction and did not experience sagging skin. That is because our skin is capable of some amazing things! It will naturally contract during the healing process if it has enough elasticity to spring back into place. But procedures like VASER® Liposuction help improve this response by stimulating collagen.

Liposuction and Skin Quality

Liposuction does not cause loose skin. But the procedure can make it more visible by removing the supporting fat. This result is more common after massive weight loss or pregnancy.

Keep in mind that even the most advanced type of liposuction can not treat significant drooping. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Dean Kleto will evaluate your skin quality during a consultation. He can determine if a procedure like traditional or VASER® Liposuction will create the results that you desire. In some cases, he may even recommend an alternative surgery.

A pinch test is a rudimentary way to check your skin elasticity at home. If your skin bounces back after you pinch it between your thumb and forefinger, you likely have good elasticity.

Maximizing Your Liposuction Results

Your chosen liposuction procedure and your skin quality will have a big impact on your results. However, there are some things you can do to help your skin tighten up as much as possible.

Be sure to follow all of your pre-operative and post-operative instructions. These steps may include wearing a compression garment to help the skin evenly adhere to the underlying tissue.

3 Common Myths About Eyelid Surgery

Wed, 02/23/2022

Woman holding her hand near her eyesBlepharoplasty is an incredibly popular type of facial plastic surgery. Also known as eyelid surgery, this procedure is performed over 300,000 times each year in America, according to the latest statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Yet misinformation still remains.

Myth #1: Eyelid Surgery is Purely Cosmetic

Eyelid surgery certainly has its cosmetic benefits. It can correct visible signs of aging to achieve a younger and more refreshed appearance. However, it can also have great functional benefits.

Sometimes, the skin on your upper eyelids will sag to the point of obstructing your vision. An eyelid lift can eliminate the problem, increasing your visual field and improving your quality of life. You should be able to open your eyes much more fully after this transformative procedure.

Myth #2: Eyelid Surgery Has a Long Recovery

Some plastic surgery procedures require a lot of downtime. Eyelid surgery isn’t one of them.

The blepharoplasty recovery process is fairly easy. You can generally expect about a week of considerable swelling and bruising. Most patients resume normal activities within ten days.

Myth #3: Eyelid Surgery Only Treats The Upper Lids

An eyelid lift can do wonders for droopy and aged upper eyelids. But it doesn’t stop there. It can also address a wide range of cosmetic concerns that typically affect the lower eyelids, such as:

  • Under-eye bags
  • Excess fat
  • Sagging skin

Keep in mind that eyelid surgery is not one-size-fits-all. It will be fully customized to meet your needs and goals. You may benefit from an upper eyelid lift, a lower eyelid lift, or both surgeries. Some patients combine their procedure with a facelift or a brow lift for comprehensive results.

Wear loose, cozy pants that are easy to put on and take off. Remember, you don't need to be dressed to the nines on this day; you just need to be comfortable and wear clothing that is easy to remove so you can get into a surgical gown.
  • Wear clothing that isn't a hassle. Lots of zippers, hooks, laces, etc., may be inconvenient if you need to undress and re-dress. Similar to our first point, we encourage you to dress loose and comfy for maximum convenience.
  • Bring a warm sweater. Sometimes patients get a little chilly in plastic surgery offices. Bring a sweater just in case.
  • Wear warm socks. You will probably be asked to remove your shoes for the exam. Warm socks will keep your feet nice and toasty.

When it comes down to it, it's important to wear an outfit to your consultation in which you feel the most comfortable. There really are no right or wrong clothes to wear, but we do want to provide you with these tips to make sure your experience is a good one.
