Millions of men and women safely receive BOTOX® Cosmetic injections each year. BOTOX® is FDA-approved to treat frown lines, which means it meets federally defined safety standards.

Serious complications from BOTOX® are rare. More common side effects include:

  • Redness, itching or swelling at the injection site
  • Mild pain or discomfort at the injection site
  • Headache and nausea
  • Drooping eyelid (occurs in less than 1 percent of cases)

These side effects are uncommon, but are also temporary when they do occur. Serious complications – such as the effect of BOTOX® migrating to different body areas – occur most frequently with higher doses of BOTOX® used for medical, non-cosmetic purposes.

There are many misconceptions regarding BOTOX®. This non-surgical cosmetic procedure cannot give you Botulism. BOTOX® does not permanently paralyze your muscles; in fact, the effects of BOTOX® begin to wear off after three or four months.

If you are concerned about the safety of BOTOX®, you should inform your plastic surgeon of any known allergens. Some people are allergic to certain ingredients in the injectable.

BOTOX® has long been prized for years for its ability to provide facial rejuvenation effects without downtime and without the use of surgery.
