There are two breast implant types, each consisting of an outer silicone shell. The shell can be filled with saline fluid or silicone gel.

Some of the distinguishing features of silicone-filled breast implants include:

  • Most natural look and feel
  • Breast does not deflate in the event of a rupture
  • Pre-filled before placement in the breast
  • FDA-approved for women age 22 and older

If your silicone breast implant ruptures, the gel will retain its shape, so your breast shape should not change. Because silicone ruptures can be difficult to detect, women with this type of breast implant should receive regular MRI scans.

Saline implants are filled with saline fluid, a saltwater solution. Some of the ways saline implants differ from silicone include:

  • Saline implants tend to look and feel less natural
  • More susceptible to visible rippling and wrinkling
  • Inflated with saline fluid during breast augmentation
  • FDA-approved for women age 18 and older

If a saline breast implant ruptures, the saline fluid will be harmlessly absorbed by your body and your breast will have a flattened appearance, signaling you to contact your plastic surgeon.

Choosing the right breast implant for you is influenced by your unique body and desires, and plastic surgeon Dr. Dean Kleto can provide more information about how each breast implant type will influence your outcome.
