When Should I Replace Old Breast Implants?

Technically, breast implants have no expiration date. Some will last decades without any complications. You should only replace your breast implants for one of two reasons: you encounter a problem, or you are no longer satisfied with your breasts’ appearance.

Some of the most common problems that require breast implant removal and replacement are:

  • Rupture
  • Capsular contracture
  • Breast is sagging off the implant
  • Implant deformity
  • Asymmetry

If you have saline breast implants, you will know there is a rupture when your breasts begin to take on a “deflated” look. If you have silicone breast implants, the FDA recommends that you undergo an MRI at least every two years to detect ruptures, since there is usually no way to tell a rupture has occurred simply by looking at your breasts.

If you are concerned about complications with old breast implants, or simply dislike their appearance, please contact Dean Kleto, M.D. today or call (865) 524-2442 to schedule an initial consultation. We serve patients throughout the Knoxville, Sevierville, and Knox County areas of Tennessee.
