What Type of Tummy Tuck Do I Need?

There are three main approaches to the tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) procedure: mini, complete, and extended. In order to determine which approach would best meet your needs, our Knox County plastic surgeon Dr. Dean Kleto will carefully evaluate your frame, the amount of excess skin in your abdominal area, and other factors.

Types of Tummy Tucks

The differences between each type of tummy tuck can be summarized as follows:

  • Mini tummy tuck – This procedure is ideal if you only need to tighten skin and muscles below your navel (belly button). A mini tummy tuck only involves a single, relatively short incision, leaving you with less scarring than a full tummy tuck.
  • Full tummy tuck – A full abdominoplasty is designed to address your entire abdomen, both above and below the navel. Dr. Kleto will make two incisions in order to fully access the skin and muscles of your abdomen, resulting in complete tightening and improved contours throughout the stomach area.
  • Extended tummy tuck – In an extended tummy tuck, your hips and flanks are addressed in addition to your abdomen. If you have bulging skin in your lower sides and back, Dr. Kleto will discuss this option with you. However, it’s important to note that an extended tummy tuck involves a longer surgical and recovery time.

A tummy tuck can dramatically improve the contours of your stomach and surrounding areas of your abdomen. Although some recovery time is necessary for each of the tummy tuck methods described above, the vast majority of our patients find the benefits more than outweigh the time and effort spent obtaining them.
