About Botox Cosmetic for Facial Rejuvenation in Knoxville

The primary advantage of BOTOX is that it is a minimally invasive procedure that provides immediate results. There is little to no recovery time from BOTOX, although some patients may experience redness at the injection sites for up to two days following their procedure. In general, BOTOX side effects are minimal and rare.

BOTOX® Cosmetic is a safe, effective, and easy way to reduce the obvious signs of aging. While there is some misinformation regarding its safety, the truth is that the FDA has found BOTOX® Cosmetic to be among the safest nonsurgical procedures available today. BOTOX Cosmetic is considered minimally invasive, and known to be a pain free procedure as well.

BOTOX results typically last for four to six months. However, many patients find that simply returning to our office two to three times a year is sufficient to keep their face wrinkle-free and attractive at all times.

What is in Botox®?

Botox Cosmetic is one of the most popular and recognized wrinkle-reducing injectables. It's a class of neurotoxins, botulinum toxin type A, that has been used clinically for decades under different names. In fact, it was during medical use that the cosmetic effects of botulinum toxin were identified! Botulinum toxin is a purified substance that comes from bacteria. In large amounts, it was known to cause botulism. Botox uses such finite amounts of the purified protein that there is virtually no risk of severe complications.

How Does Botox® Reduce Wrinkles?

Botox treatment focuses on muscles, so how does it reduce the appearance of lines and creases? We use this FDA-approved cosmetic drug for specific types of wrinkles called dynamic wrinkles. These are the lines that develop due to frowning, squinting, laughing, and making the various expressions we do on a daily basis. Dynamic wrinkles form because active muscle movement tugs on the skin. When the muscle is injected with just a few units of Botox, it stops receiving the nerve signal that causes it to contract. No contraction, no tug on the skin, and the wrinkles disappear!

How Does Botox® Lift the Brows?

The Botox Brow Lift is one of the most requested injectable techniques performed today. It's important to recognize how the process works so you don't fall victim to a false idea of what this treatment can do. Botox works by temporarily paralyzing target muscles. Often, the brows descend over time because the orbicularis oculi and the corrugator muscles are tensed and pulling the eyebrows down more so than the frontalis muscles of the forehead can pull them up to hold them in their rightful place. Botox has no effect on the frontalis muscles. It can, however, lessen the pull of the muscles that pull the brows down so the upward-pulling muscles aren't opposed in their function.

Is Botox® Better than a Brow Lift?

Seeing how Botox works, you might gain some insight into which option would be better for you, injections or a surgical brow lift. After Botox injections, your brows might sit slightly higher on your forehead due to the diminished action of the downward-pulling muscles. That said, they might not move very much. The position of your brow may remain low if your frontalis muscles that pull upward aren't very strong. They may remain in a lower position than you'd like because they naturally sit too low for the frontalis muscles to pull them higher. In these situations, Botox may not achieve the same satisfying results that a brow lift could.

When Should I Start Getting Botox®?

There is no ideal age at which Botox works best. You may seek treatment in your twenties as a way to postpone the onset of dynamic wrinkles. Preventive Botox may require fewer units of product to achieve this goal. You may also receive Botox if you have more significant creases that have been left unattended for decades. Generally, we see patients in their thirties and forties who are beginning to notice persistent frown lines, crow's feet, and other creases that are caused by facial movement.

Is There Anything I Need to do to Prepare for Botox Injections?

Botox injections don't require much preparation or downtime. The procedure is quick and carries very little risk. That said, because there is a slight chance that you could bruise after receiving injectable treatment, you may want to avoid blood thinners for a few days before your appointment. Blood thinners come in all types, not just prescription medications! Aspirin and ibuprofen can thin the blood. Supplements like Gingko Biloba and vitamin E may, as well. Finally, alcohol is a blood thinner, so you may choose to skip that cocktail or glass of wine in the days before receiving injectables.
