What Are the Requirements for Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation creates large, full, shapely breasts. It not only boosts the size, but also enhances the overall appearance of the breasts. Hundreds of thousands of women undergo this procedure in the U.S. every year! You may be really excited about the prospect of finally getting this procedure that you’ve been considering for some time, but how do you know if you meet all of the candidacy requirements?

A close up of a woman's large bust in a black braThe only way to know for sure is to arrange a consultation with experienced plastic surgeon Dr. Dean Kleto. He will first listen fully to your goals, concerns, expectations, and ideas, before letting you know if he thinks breast enlargement is the right match for you. Making sure the expectations are in alignment with the outcome is the first step.

Other requirements and candidacy factors include:

  • You are in good overall health. If you have any active infections or health conditions, Dr. Kleto will review the details and your current treatments. He will discuss how the presence of any health conditions will affect your candidacy for the procedure.
  • Your habits around tobacco use and/or alcohol consumption. If you aren’t willing to quit smoking – at the very least temporarily – then you may not be an ideal candidate for breast augmentation. Smoking and other tobacco use negatively affects the healing process, so now may be the right time to quit. Similarly, moderate to excessive alcohol consumption will likely need to be avoided during the pre-surgical and recovery phase.
  • You’re making decisions clearly. Your emotional well-being is an important part of opting for any elective surgery. You shouldn’t be getting larger breasts in order to make someone else happy, to make yourself feel like someone else, to address an underlying issue like depression or poor self-image. Dr. Kleto will want to make sure you are making this decision from a healthy, clear mindset.
  • You’ve weighed the risks and benefits. All surgeries have risks and benefits. As a fully informed patient, you deserve a clear accounting of all the possible complications, the likelihood of those complications occurring, and a description of what to expect from results. Dr. Kleto cares deeply that each of his patients is making an informed decision, and he will provide everything you need to know in order to make that decision.

These are a few of the candidacy issues you’ll discuss with Dr. Kleto but there certainly are others. He takes all the time you need during this visit so that you can feel comfortable with whatever decision you make.
